can't record with fast track?

hi
so i recently came into a near ANCIENT model of m-audio fast track usb and accompanying software because the shop i work is trying to push off our crap b-stock junk. anyway, the software out of the box was so old, my comp wouldn't even install it. so, after a huge headache, i finally downloaded and installed the updated drivers for the interface as well as the software. the interface hooks up to my keyboard fine, and i can hear through it, so i know that much is working. the problem is recording though. the thing comes with m-audio session, which is complete junk and slows my comp down and i just don't want to use it. i'd rather just use audacity. unfortunately, the interface will only record into session, and not into audacity. i'm confused because i thought i set the preferences right in terms of recording/playback in audacity but i guess not?? it's especially strange because when i hit record, i can still hear sound from the instrument through the device, but audacity doesn't pick up on ANY of it, at all. just dead silence. any thoughts?
help greatly appreciated,
joseph
