Problems changing recording source.
I had a slightly older version of Audacity running on my old computer, which recently crashed. I got a laptop, with windows Vista, and now I cannot change my recording source.
On the older version, there was a box just to the right of the microphone volume (the box is still there, it's just greyed out and unusable) where I could change the recording source from Microphone, line in, phone, stereo output, mono output, etc.
In prefrences, under Audio I/O, I'm given only the following two options: "Microsoft Sound MApper - Input" and "Microphone." The problem is that it doesn't seem to make any difference to anything whichever one is selected.
My computer seems to want to automatically use the built in microphone, not allowing me to either use the microphone jack, or record the stereo output.
Please help!

Re: Problems changing recording source.
Vista tries to build walls between everything and it messes up source selection.
You need to do it instead from the Windows control panels.

Re: Problems changing recording source.
I have a slightly different problem. My laptop comes with a built-in integrated microphone, and I am trying to record me playing the piano without the mic. When I playback what I just recorded, it sounds very static-like and the waves on the track are square, looking as if it was too loud. Also, i can't select what input I want to use, such as line-in, mic, etc. My input source selector is also grayed out but the rest of the mixer toolbar is fine. My main problem is the static sound, and I've lowered the volumes, but it hasn't helped. Please help!!!

I tried this solution. However, when I tried to change preferences, I got a window for Mouse bindings only. Any further suggestions?kozikowski wrote:Vista tries to build walls between everything and it messes up source selection.

Ok that did not help my problem at all. My problem is that it is grayed where the drop down box for the input selector is which is next to the volume for the microphone
Re: Problems changing recording source.
Find this part of your control panel: (if you have trouble finding it, read the articles from the links that Kozikowski posted)
Take a screenshot of it and attach it to your reply.

Re: Problems changing recording source.
I found this section in the control panel, however the only things I have in the recording tab are the microphone and the Internal AUX Jack- disabled (NVIDIA HDMI Audio). It doesn't have CD Audio. It also doesn't have Line In, Aux, or Mono Mix
