Play does not play

I've started experiencing an odd problem since installing v1.3.8 on Windows XP. The issue persists even since I've uninstalled v1.3.8 and reverted back to 1.2.6.

For some time I've been using Audacity to record from cassettes and LP's. Recording works fine. However, when I try to play back a recording nothing happens. There is no error message, the cursor position does not move. The only indication that I'm actually in playback mode is that a green triangle appears above the cursor position and some of the menu items gray out until I press stop.
