Audacity changed following system restore

Hello if anyone can come up with some suggestions or solutions to this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

I have used audacity (1.2.6) for about a year now, and consider myself an experienced user. I never had any issues at all, and was 100% satisfied.

However, I recently had to go through a system restore on my laptop.

Since then, when using audacity, there is a very brief delay from my input (approx 0.25 seconds) when recording... HOWEVER!!! this problem never existed before, and I have exactly the same operating system as before, and have checked absolutely everything that I can think of, yet still I cannot solve this issue. I allow playback while recording, and allow the playback of all other tracks too, as this is the best way to work --- and I am not prepared to change that.

After reading countless threads of other peoples problems, it seems people are quick to shout out "get a new soundcard" - but I will never do this, as this problem never existed before on my current set up.

Also - using the time shift to compensate for the recording lag is totally unacceptable.

I am beginning to think that since my system restore, something fundamental has been changed, and I have checked everywhere.. but to no avail.

I am SO depressed about this because I love this program, and I cannot use it anymore, so if anyone can help... then thank you!

Switch off "Software Playthrough" in Audacity Preferences.
Sorry can't remember where it is in Audacity 1.2 - it may be in "Audio I/O".
