Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Setup files corrupted?

Post by tomroemmele » Fri Aug 07, 2009 8:33 pm

I downloaded Audacity last week to start converting recordings from a digital studio to disc. I eventually figured out the static problem (sound card), but Audacity automatically started maxing out the input level, so the recordings clip, and the minimal static that was still there is now amplified. So I deleted the program from the computer with the intent to re-download it. Now it's telling me the setup files are corrupted and won't begin the download. Any help?

Ok, I got it downloaded again, but it's doing the same thing. Maxing out the input level and clipping like crazy. Lowering the input level only makes it worse.

You may need to burn 1.2 off completely and install 1.3. Audacity 1.2, alone of all the versions saved its preferences in The Dreaded Windows Registry.

So if you really do have damaged preferences, you need to get rid of them before you do anything else. They will contaminate everything else you do.

There is an easier way.

1) Close Audacity.
2) Open the "audacity.cfg" file in a text editor (Notepad will do), and delete everything except for the first line "NewPrefsInitialized=1"
3) Save the file so that it overwrites the original.
4) Launch Audacity - it should prompt you to select your language.
