WON'T LET ME EXPORT & SAVE AS .WAV IN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER

I have audacity 1.2.6 on my Windows XP Pro laptop. I just purchased the Edirol UA-1EX external sound card (thanks Waxcylinder!) and now my sound is great using Audacity. But........Audacity is saving my files as .aup. I'm having trouble saving as a .wav and exporting as a .wav to my Windows Media Player. When my project is done the drop down bar doesn't allow me to export as a .wav file (I can see that option in the drop-down menu, but I can't select it-the text is gray and not black). In "Preferences", my settings show that the Uncompressed Export File Format is WAV Microsoft 16 bit PCM, but when I try to open the saved Audacity file Windows Media Player can't find/recognize/play the file. In my Audio I/O settings it shows the playback & recording devices as Sigma Tel Audio. Should the recording and/or playback settings be set to setting be set to Microsoft Sound Mapper? Or is it something else? NEED HELP! Thanks, PDE

There are several flavours of Export
Export by itself should export the whole project as a WAV or whatever.
Export Selection as WAV (or whatever) requires you to have selected a portion of Audio (use click&drag with your cursor), which then gets exported.
The third and often most useful is the Export Multiple as WAV or whatever. This requires you to have set up a label track with labels identifying the track/song breaks. This then exports a set of files with titles based on the track/song names you provided when making the labels - BTW the labelling process is MUCH easier in 1.3.x than it is in 1.2. See this Wiki thread abouyt multiple file export:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ate_tracks
And you do have to be Stopped and not just Paused for these to operate.

P.S. glad you like the Edirol soundcard

OK, I figured out how to export as a .wav file.......and I saved it as a .wav in My Music. But when I want to play it back, there is no sound in Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player recogonizes the file, but there's no sound on playback. I tried playing it back using my Edirol and also with my regular sound card built in the computer, but no dice. I know I'm close to finally making this thing work, but I'm stumped (again!).

Export the file as "WAV 16 bit Microsoft PCM, 44.1 kHz"
Virtually all programs, including WMP understand this format.
See this post for how to do that in Audacity 1.2.x

Steve, those are exactly what my settings are, but it still doesn't have sound on playback. Just in case, I downloaded some cd tracks directly to My Music from Windows Media Player, and Windows Media Player has no problems playing those back (but the cd files show Windows Media Audio File, not .wav file).

Try downloading this file and see if it plays:
http://audacity.easyspacepro.com/examples/piano.wav
This is Kozikowski's famous piano sample and is a totally standard 16/44.1 WAV file.

I solved the playback problem (I needed to set Audacity to record with the Edirol device in Audio I/O preferences, but play back with the built-in computer sound card device)..........and it worked. I thought I was home free! But yet another problem cropped up, here it is: I recorded one song (only) from side one of the cassette. It played back perfectly. So, I went to side two of the cassette, and recorded three more songs (recorded all three songs seperately-one at a time-started and stopped Audacity & the cassette player). But when I play any of those three songs, the other two songs bleed into the song I'm playing! it sounds like a hodge-podge of all three songs playing at once! The first song I recorded from side one doesn't have any other interference. So, before I pull out what hair I have remaining, what do I do?

You have three songs on three tracks, one below the other?
If you want the songs as individual tracks, it is usual to record one song, then Export it, then start a new project and record the next song - this way you only have one song in a project.
If you want to export all three songs together so that one plays after the other, use the "Time Shift tool" (double headed horizontal arrow) to drag the tracks left/right so that one plays after the other, then Export.
You can also Export part of a track, or one single track of many tracks by selecting just the parts(s) that you want to Export, then use "Export Selection" from the file menu.

It's my performance, but my posted file is 16/48, not 16/44.1. So it's been changed, no doubt the reason for the new filename.
