Downloading to new PC

I have been a not very regular but quite successful user of Audacity over the past year or so, however I have now had to purchase a new PC. I tried three times to download yesterday [XP Pro] but on each occasion when the download ended and the program tried to open it failed.
As far as I am aware I selected the right version to download.
Any suggestions please?
