Newbie to audio recording

Post by Tinks » Thu Oct 25, 2007 8:25 pm

Hey'a everyone. I want to record the audio I hear from my pc (particularly I want to record the audio when I play a 'Scorch File' online). Although I can record it with Audacity, I can't get a good quality recording. It is muffled, with lots of 'static' noise. I am using Vista Home Premium, and my sound card is Realtek High Definition Audio. I'd appreciate any advice on how I can get a clear recording with no 'white noise' background sound. Thanks :)

That's odd...

Are you sure you're not picking up audio from a microphone while it's playing? Can you still record the same audio if you turn your speakers off (you should be able to)?

Vista has many audio problems (still), many of which are covered in this wiki page:

I am also getting highly muffled recording - from the CD player on my new Toshiba laptop.

I have no mic plugged in.

I have been able to successfully record cassettes when using the mic input.

I've checked to make sure I have the most up to date sound card (Realtek High Defintion Audio.

I've read all the help pages on Recording, and on Vista. They all apply to no recording. My issue is recording so muffled you can barely make out the tunes.

My OS: Windows Vista Home Basic.

Any thoughts?

It takes two or three readings of that post to get it all in.

On Windows machines, it's perfectly natural to be able to record Mic In, Line In, and Mix Out. It's this last one that kills you. Mix-Out is the connection to your speakers. It's the one you need in order to record internet radio shows and people tend to leave it running by accident when they turn on a microphone or line level device for recording. The upshot of that is the recording happens twice, once going into the computer and once again going back out. On a really fast, new computer the difference could be just right to give you badly distorted sound. On slow computers, there is an actual echo and the effect is easier to figure out.

"There's an echo when I try to record my microphone on my Windows machine."

Lot's of Windows posts like that. I bet that's what you have.

You just need to go back through the Windows Sound Panels and make sure the only thing that's opened up is the one thing you want to record and nothing else. This is the writeup on how to deal with recording internet radio with a Windows machine. You want to do the exact opposite of that.
