I have no problems recording albums to the audacity programme and can create tracks and then export multiple to my documents music file. I can play/listen to the tracks on media player and then drag them to the burn list, the blank cd is ready to go but as soon as I press 'Burn' I get red crosses next to each track and the error message is that it cannot open the wav file. What am I doing wrong ... I have been two days trying to get this to work but just can't sort the problem - all I want to do is record the album and then put it on a cd!

Set the "Uncompressed Export Format" to "WAV Microsoft 16 bit PCM"
(you will find that option in "Edit menu > Preferences > File Formats").

Before you Export, set the Project Rate to 44100 (lower left corner of the main Audacity Window).

Then use "Export as WAV" from the file menu.

The Exported WAV files will now be in a format that Windows Media Player can understand.

Okay, I just tried all of the above suggestions. (Audacity was already set at these parameters). The file plays on Windows Media Player, but will not let me burn it to a cd. Any ideas?

Don't use WMP for burning CDs, use CDBurnerXP - it's a much better CD burner and it's free.

Okay, thanks for the quick reply! I'll give cdbuner xp a try, is there anything I need to know about exporting files from Audacity to cd burner xp?

Well, I am unable to split the tracks on either Audacity or CD Burner XP. I labled each song and generated a 10 sec. silence between each song on Audacity, and on CD Burner XP, after three attempts, I now have three cd's with one long track on them. What step am I missing?

The Audacity process is to get the whole thing on one timeline and set a label (Control-B) at the beginning of each song. Then Export Multiple and Audacity will produce a pile of individual WAV files for burning.

Thanks for the reply Koz. Yeah, I did edit as you describe. I'm going to have to try it again. How do I clear Audacity to start over again? (I'm getting an error message saying "the system can't find the file specified")

You can get errors like that if you used bad filenames. Upper and lower case letters, numbers, dash and underscore. Those are the only characters allowed in a filename. People get killed all the time when they try to put dates in a filename. The slash mark is deadly.

Thanks Koz. Dude, you must be psychic! I did put a date in there. How do I clear Audacity so I can start over again? I'm making a new recording now. EDIT: I answered my own question. I uninstalled and reinstalled. I have many very simple questions, I'll search first, ask questions later. Thanks for your help! When the confusion clears, I'll try editing again.
