Ever do an error check? My Computer > C: > Properties > Tools > Error Check.

Re: Audacity hangs on startup
Hi. I just tried again, following that order. Still the same thing. And just in case this helps, here's a screenshot of what it looks like when I run it:

I can't think of anything minor, either; though maybe I'm forgetting something? I have ITunes on this PC (no Skype); but I've had both programs for a long time and they've coexisted up 'till now.

Re: Audacity hangs on startup
I've done error checks in the past, but not since this problem came up. I'll try that now.
Re: Audacity hangs on startup
The error check didn't fix it either.
Re: Audacity hangs on startup
Try the Audacity 1.3.8 zip file from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows
Extract the Zip file to a folder (either on your desktop or "MyDocuments") and try running it from there.

Re: Audacity hangs on startup
I tried running that off my desktop (after uninstalling the version I had, re-running the registry clean-up and rebooting), and still had the exact same problem.
Re: Audacity hangs on startup
It looks like you have something running that is clashing with Audacity, Can you do a fresh boot of your computer and shut down all non-essential processes, then try Audacity.

Re: Audacity hangs on startup
I don't know... I reboot, had no other programs running... went into TaskManager and stopped every process I could. It still hung at the same spot.

Re: Audacity hangs on startup
How about VST plug-ins? Have you added any since the trouble started? If you have the VST Enabler in the Audacity Plug-Ins folder (inside the 1.2.6 installation folder), Audacity will be looking for VST's in that folder and in the system locations noted here:
http://audacityteam.org/vst/
1.3.8 looks for VST plug-ins without an Enabler, so if this was the problem, it would behave the same as 1.2.6. The latest 1.3.9 development version has fixes for VST loading problems. So if you have the VST Enabler in 1.2.6, try removing it. If that fixes the problem and you need all the VSTs you have, try 1.3.9 and see if you can run Audacity and keep the VSTs as they are.
If VSTs aren't the problem, try running Audacity in Safe Mode. Launch Windows in Safe Mode by rebooting and hitting F8 before Windows loads, then choose Safe Mode from the menu. Safe mode does not load sound device drivers, so this will (probably) identify if they are causing the problem without having to uninstall the sound device. The only problem is that 1.3.8 won't run in Safe Mode, so you'll need 1.3.7. If you know the sound device has been updated recently, then you could go into Device Manager and try rolling back to the previous driver set.

Re: Audacity hangs on startup
Ok, running it in safe mode (that .1.3.7 seemed to be Mac only, so I re-installed 1.2.6 and tried with that one) seemed to work.
I haven't loaded any VSTs... the only thing I added to Audacity was that LAME mp3 encoder, and I added that long before the problem started (and used audacity many times with no problems between then and when the issue hit). I haven't updated anything, really. No new soundcards or software or add-ons or anything.
But it DID work in Safe Mode (but not when I tried it again in regular mode afterward).
