Audacity Forum

hi,

i'm a first time user of audacity so sorry if i'm making any obvious mistakes. i've just got a hp550 laptop (here: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164845), and audacity won't let me record streaming audio.

as i understand it, i should be picking 'stereo mix' from a top-right dropdown box, but this box is greyed out and i can't select anything. if i press record,only silence is recorded. i'm not sure what soundcard i have or how i could find out.

can anyone help?

i should also mention that i've got a cable plugged into my headphone socket that goes to my amp/speakers, not sure if this makes a difference.
