Song's data files have gone missing without a crash?

Hey guys,

my problem is I was working on a song, it had about 8-9 tracks here and there everything was going fine. I made a point to save frequently just incase in crashed. Well I was almost done and I wanted to check out a different track I could sample. So I saved, and closed out the program.

When I went back into audacity 5 minutes later, opened the project file.. I get tons of errors, and it says nearly all of the data files are missing from the song? The tracks show up as completely silent except for 1 or two. The data folder is still chock full of data files but the ones it's citing are nowhere to be found, even using the windows file search functions..

"Error 2: the system cannot find the file specified"

Any help would be appreciated, especially to prevent this from happening again in the future.

-note: I am NOT using the beta version.

Perhaps you should be. Audacity 1.2 is getting more and more unstable and unworkable as we get on. Anybody doing serious work has abandoned 1.2 long ago.

Audacity will not Save sound files. It saves Projects. Projects tend to marry themselves to original sound files. It appears that you used a Music CD as a source for all your work and then took the CD out of the computer. Poof. No more music. You can usually put the CD back in to get your show back. If you do that and it works, Export As WAV. That will give you an actual sound file with all your music inside.

There is one other thing that can cause Bad Magic. Computer file names should only contain upper and lower case letters, numbers, underscore, and dash. That's it. Any other character can cause damage.
