I'm using Audacity to record directly to the computer from a turntable. I have the RCA cables going into a two-into-one stereo cable with a stereo mini-jack on the end, plugged into the "line in" jack on the back of my computer. I can record, but have very little volume. If I crank up the volume slider under "audio track" (the - _______ +) I get a lot of noise. I don't even see the signal on the screen--just a flat line--although I can hear it if I turn the computer up loud enough. Do I need to have an amplifier between the turntable and computer?

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Yes, you really should have one.kjhansen wrote:Do I need to have an amplifier between the turntable and computer?
If you have a stereo receiver with a 'phono' input, that will work. But if you don't, and you're interested in making digital copies of all your records, you should buy a phono pre-amp.
I use the TCC TC750LC (it's got a volume knob), but there are many other models to choose from:
