The song names qualify as "metadata" and that's handled very differently depending on the music format and the machine that's running it.
When you put a CD in your computer and it plays and the song names show up, it means the computer went out the internet to get the names. There are no song titles on a music CD. So metadata (the song names in this case )is handled by a whole different computer than the one you're playing the music on.
MP3 does have places for artist and song title, but I bet Windows Media either doesn't know how to deal with it, or carries song title by itself in a different way. It's worth a trip into the Windows Media instructions.
This is also a good place to change the ID3 tag and see if that helps. When you export your MP3 songs, the panel asks you if you wanted ID3v1 or ID3v2 tags. Windows Media might not like one over the other. The song titles are handled by those tags.

ID3v2 is "More flexible" - it carries more data - ID3v1 is "more compatible" i.e. plays in a lot more places (software MP3 players iPods etc).
As koz says the v2 might not play everywher - and if you don't need the extra metada (and I supect you don't) then I would go for compatibility and stick with v1.
Personally, I think that v1 should be the default Audacity setting - or the user should be able to re-select their own default.

You mean you had to go through Windows' file properties menu? You shouldn't have to do that, Audacity can write id3 info without any problems (at least, I know 1.2.6 can).
You are exporting to mp3 directly from Audacity, right? If you're exporting to wav and using some other program to convert to mp3 then I'd expect this problem.
Just in case, the proper method to do this is:
Code: Select all
Just before you export, click Project -> Edit id3 tags. Enter your info and click ok.
Now, press File -> Export to MP3 and name the file anything you like (it doesn't have to be related to the id3 tag at all).
