MP3 files crashing Audacity Beta 1.3.8

I have just downloaded the 1.3.8 beta. On one machine running Windows XP Pro, it crashes every time I try to load an MP3 file (I have tried several). The machine has an on-board sound card. Settings seem to be the same as for Beta 1.3.7. Wav files load ok. On another machine, also with XP Pro and with a reasonably high-end sound card, MP3s load well. Does anyone have ideas?
