Audacity v1.2.6 will not record audio

Recently downloaded Audacity v1.2.6 will not convert audio cassette tapes to *.wav files. I have Windows 2000 sp4 fully up to date with Windows Update.
Audacity will read, play, and graph *.wav files already on my hard drive . It will not input analog signal from my cassette player via my in-line soundcard input. Audacity's left and right input bar graph monitors show that the signal is getting thru to Audacity, but there is no pass thru to the headphones plugged into the soundcard speaker output, and the spectral graph display only records a featureless straight line.
As far as I know, all my volume controls are turned up. The soundcard itself seems to be functional. I am a new Audacity user. What am I doing wrong? Thank you. Jim Marshall
