Converting

I have a 3.29 gig WAV file on my PC. I want to convert it to mp3 but when I try to open it with Audacity, nothing happens (no importing or nothing). Can't Audacity handle these big files? Are there other files who can handle this?

You might have a different problem. How big is the hard drive and how much space do you have left? Hard numbers are good.

Where did the file come from? Do you know what the specification of the file is? Right Click the file > Properties > Advanced. Windows still has shadows of its original 2GB file limit, so you might be running into that.

I regularly open up 120 minute 44100, 16-bit, Stereo WAV files and it takes almost 30 seconds to work. Those are 1.2GB files. Do you get an error message?

Do you have Windows showing you file extensions? It might be good if you have troubles. It saves a lot of confusion.

I made the file with a program called Atomixmp3. I have done this also in the past (only for smaller files), but also files around 1.4 gig. I could convert it now.

Now however, I have a 3.29 Gig file. Windows Media Player wont play it because it's out of memory, I cant load it in Nero or Audacity. VLC Media Player does actually play it.

How can I split this WAV file (if its a memory file) if not even one program will load it

I have alot of memory (laptop from lsat year) and around 30 gig free

What's also strange, when I rightclick my file it and check details, he doesn't say there's "time"

Hmm when I import the file as "raw data" in Audacity, it does seem to work. Then i can convert it to mp3 apparently.

So it seems like my problem is solved. I will come back to this when I actually have converted the WAV to mp3 to let you know if it worked out.
