Is there a way to customize the Audacity desktop without having to change settings like floating toolbars each time I open the program.
Thanks in advance for any help out there

Bob,
your Preferences certainly should be saved for you - that is the entire point of preference setting.
In 1.2.x on Windows the Preferences are store in the Windows Registry (ugh!)
In 1.3.x the developers have moved the saved preferences to an audacity.cfg file (one is created per user - so individual preferences can be saved).
If you already have 1.2 installed and then install 1.3 the Audacity will copy the preferences from the registry to the new .cfg file.

I wondered about that. So any addition of Audacity 1.3+ will always go looking in the Dreaded Windows Registry first. That's the curse. Do the DWR listings vanish if you uninstall Audacity 1.2?

No they don't - they remain there. That is why there are threads on the forum that tell you how to clean up the registry. Richard Ash once posted a link with a little utility to clean up the registry of Audacity references. See this thread

From the Audacity wiki
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... o_defaults
1. Go here (
http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/audacitydl.html ) , scroll to the bottom of the page and right-click over "Audacity 1.2.6 reset Preferences .reg file for Windows"
2. Save this .reg file to your drive
3. Double-click the saved .reg file and click "yes" when asked if you want to add the information to the Registry

I may not have made my question clear. I'm actually looking for a way to reconfigure the Audacity desktop to my own comfort level. That would mean keeping a floating toolbar in place after it's moved, or keeping a resized track window as a default.

Most of the Preferences are saved automatically.
Toolbars that are docked will remain in the same place when you close/reopen Audacity and Floating toolbars will remain floating.
Which options in particular are not being saved?

I tried repositioning and resizing the meter toolbar but when reopening I see that it has returned to the docked state. I would also like to permanently resize the audio track window to make it larger. I know I can do that with each new project but I was really trying to make permanent changes in the Audacity desktop

Those settings should be saved automatically as long as Audacity shuts down correctly. Try closing Audacity from the File menu and see if the changes are retained.
Oh, hang on a second - this is the 1.2 forum. I'm not sure what settings Audacity 1.2 is able to save. You may need to upgrade to Audacity 1.3 to get this functionality.

You're right, there really is no way to save changes to the desktop from project to project. I think I'll live with it until 1.3 becomes stable.
Thanks for all the help, everyone.
