Playback speed

Post by bob513 » Thu Jul 23, 2009 4:43 pm

I made a few edits to a file and probably fiddled with something I shouldn't have as I tried to tone down the volume of an edit I inserted in the (spoken word) file. When I export to MP3, it is speeded up so I sound like a chipmunk. The file is also much smaller. What did I foul up? TIA.

To correct the speed, use 44100 Hz project rate:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... ation#fast

The bit rate of the exported MP3 governs its file size (lower bit rate means smaller file size but lower quality). Click Edit > Preferences: File Formats tab: MP3 Export Setup to change the bit rate. The default is 128 kbps which takes about 1 MB of space per minute.

I'm having a similar problem.

I Imported a raw audio file, yet it plays at .5x speed. I have to speed it up to 2x to get a proper sound.

When I exported it, it exported as a normal speed. Furthermore, under Edit>properties, I don't seem to have a format tab. I have Devices, Playback, Recording, Quality, Interface, Tracks, Import/Export, Projects, Libraries, Spectrograms, Directories, Warnings, Theme, Keyboard, Mouse options.

I downloaded audacity today and am trying to edit.... what am I doing wrong?

It isn't similar - the other question is about exporting MP3s at a sample rate which some players can't cope with.

That's expected if you have modified the data after you imported it. Import RAW should not be used unless you cannot import the file any other way. When you import the RAW file, set the Sample Rate in the dialogue to the rate of the file, if it's known, otherwise try 44100 Hz. The sample rate is what determines the speed.

If you downloaded Audacity from us:
http://audacityteam.org/download

we don't have a Properties menu item. Under Edit > Preferences, we have the tabs you indicate in the Beta 1.3.8 version. If that is what you have, please post in the Windows Beta Forum for future questions.

It sounds as if you have seen some documentation relating to the File Formats Preferences tab in the 1.2 version of Audacity. In 1.3, export format options are chosen not in Preferences but when you export. Please browse the rest of the Beta Manual by using the Navigation menu on the left of that File Export Dialog page. Note that when you export in 1.3.8, you go first to a Metadata window - click OK on that to proceed to the export window.
