I have done everything that has been suggested ,but I still can't get the " effect menu " out off the gray zone. Everything else works fine ,so far. Do I have to pay to get this program to work????? Program seems to be an easy ont to use,.if I can get the effect menu to work.

You need to have some audio "selected" for the effect to work on. Click and drag with your cursor to select a section or CTRL+A to select the whole project.

Oh, and you must have Stopped playing or recording - Pause is not sufficient.
