I just downloaded the software and was doing a test. I plugged in the mic and recorded and it appeared on the screen but in playback there was no sound. I check the speaker volume etc and all is OK. Suggestions?

You got blue waves and a dancing sound meter? Do you have a USB microphone? Sometimes USB/Digital microphones confuse Windows.
