adjust volume so both sounds have equal volume level.

I have an mp3 file composed of two songs and joined using movavi. I've used audacity to cut what I don't want but one song plays louder than the other. How do I correct this? I've tried the envelope tool but I'm not sure I know what I'm doing!

Thanks

Are the songs in the same track, or different tracks?
If they are in the same track, do you know how to put them into different tracks?
If you do, then put them in different tracks and use the track volume slider to adjust the levels until they sound right. (take care not to boost a track too loud and create distortion - check the playback level meter while you adjust).

The songs are on the same track. I do not know how to separate them.

Thanks

Ok, I tried this but without success: added a new track, cut one selection and pasted it to the new track. Used slide control until both sounded about the same volume but I'm not sure if I saved it correctly. In any event it didn't seem to make any difference as they still have different volume levels.

It sounds like you are doing it right. Are you using "Export" to output your audio file?
This may be a limitation in Audacity 1.2. Can you upgrade to 1.3? (don't worry about the warnings about it being beta software. These days it is more stable than the 1.2.6 version).

What I forgot to add is that I cut and pasted back to the original one track after adjusting the volumes. Should I have saved as two track?

thanks again for your help.

If you can identify exactly where the volume of the merged/one track changes -- to louder or softer -- you should be able to select either the louder or softer section and, using Amplify, either raise the softer section's level or reduce the louder section's level.

OR split the single (merged) track into two separate ones, and then:
* Open one of them and, using Amplify, increase the level to the maximum level before distortion and then......
* Open the other and do the same, and then.........
* Paste the track that's the second section onto the end of the track that's the first section, and then.......
* Export the now re-merged track

The result should be a single track whose level doesn't increase or decrease at the point it used to before doing this.
