Cannot connect with sound card

I have an E-MU 1616 sound card. It sends/receives o.k. with Steinberg Cubase LE, but I would rather use the much cleaner and understandable Audacity. I cannot (or cannot figure how to) send/receive with Audacity 1.2.6 or 1.3.7. They appear stable, but I cannot get a digital signal back and forth between the E-MU card and Audacity.

Both are set to 96k/24bit, the E-MU has an ASIO1,2 send/receive patch installed in its output section, and this works fine with the Steinberg setup. The E-MU is listed on the input and output selection options of Audacity, and it is selected. Input monitoring is on. Opening a file and playing it on Audacity shows on its output meters, but does not appear at the E-MU receive. A good signal sent from the E-MU via the AISO1,2 send does not show on the input to Audacity.

I don't know what else to do to get these two to talk.

Audacity does not support ASIO (due to licensing restrictions).
You either need to install "Windows drivers" (WDM or MME) or do the recording in a program that supports ASIO.

It is unfortunately very common for sound cards that are designed to use ASIO to have sub-standard Windows drivers, so recording in another program may be a better option.
You can still use Audacity for editing and/or mixing. Save/Export from the other program as WAV files, then Import the WAV files into Audacity. Export your finished masterpiece as a WAV file.
