Audacity files developed gaps of silence

I have been working on a CD project of a live piano concert working in Audacity 1.2.6 in Windows XP. I did a lot of editing and then saved into a new file for my final mix. After a few days, I got back to it to show it to the artist and there were random gaps of silence in all of the files! Visually, there was no change - it looked like there should be music coming out, but the sound would just cut out and then come back on later. I exported the audacity files to WAV format and the gaps showed up as thin lines between the sections of music that were still there. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix? I don't want to re-edit it if I don't have to. HELP!

I have moved this post to the appropriate part of the forum.

Audacity projects are made of multiple parts. There is the Audacity Project File (filename.aup) and there is the data that is used in the project. When you record something and save the project, the data will be written into a folder called "filename_data". If you Import audio files into a project then either they will be copied into the data folder, or the .aup file will link to the original files without copying them. This depends on the settings in "Edit menu > Preferences > Import/Export".

The waveform display is also stored in the data folder. If you have moved, renamed or deleted any of the data that the project requires, then Audacity will not be able to find it and although you may still see the waveform, the actual audio data will be missing.
