I have been ripping my CDs to MP3 at approx 256k, Variable Bitrate (VBR).
I have installed Audacity and the LAME encoder (lame_enc.dll) in order to edit my MP3s, Initially just for removing silent pauses etc. Basic encoding from Audacity works fine, and i've found out how to set the bitrate on MP3 export. However there is no VBR control on the MP3 export (LAME) configuration page?
The help for the command-line version of LAME makes it clear VBR is supported. So, how do I turn on VBR for MP3 exports from Audacity?
Hints on how to do this much appreciated.

Set LAME to use VBR?

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Re: Set LAME to use VBR?
1.2.6 doesn't support this feature of LAME. Audacity 1.3.3 does (among several other better output options).

Re: Set LAME to use VBR?
Lame supports thousands of options and it's possible to run lame from the command line in Terminal and get them all.
The Audacity Interface Panel doesn't always support the options you want.
Has anyone tried that? I do that in Linux, but not anywhere else.
