Getting rid of feedback

Hi, i'm a very new user to Audacity so would welcome your help.
I am currently trying to record our year 6 class singing a song so it can be added to an animoto montage. The problem is everytime we record we get some awful feedback.
Firstly we tried playing the backing track via the cd on the pc and then recording with a wiireless mic. We experienced some feedback here and the backingtrack was too loud and drowned out the children.
We then tried playing the cd from a portable cd player, this was better but we still picked up feedback.
Would we be better using a plug in microphone?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Chris
