no output during recording

my laptop crashed and i re-installed everything including audacity 1.2.6. prior to the crash i would get audio output as it was being recorded.......not now. i can play a recording back i get normal audio from my speakers. my os is windows xp pro sp3. jbl external speakers and realtek audio output. is there some magic switch somewhere that has to be enabled? my recording setup is behind me and i use the sound as a cue for pausing or stopping a recording while working on the computer in front of me. help!

Yes. It's "mix out" or something like that. It's not a default. You need to go looking for it.

problem solved. i had to enable software play through on the audio i/o tab in preferences.
