Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Hi,
I'm new to digital recording, and I downloaded Audacity yesterday. The OS is windows xp.
When I open a new project, the icon 'save project as' is the only saving option available. When I record a track by playback,
this option disappears, and I am also not able to save or export. I tried adding a label to see if that would enable me to access
the icons, but this didn't work. Also, most of the other options in the dropdown menus are not available, including everything
under 'effect' and 'analyze'. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks for your help

You must be stopped for the tools to light up. Record Pause will not do it, and you have to have something on a timeline. A blank production window will not let you do anything.

In Audacity 1.2, the Effects tools only light up when you have some sound selected on the time line.

Audacity may be schizophrenic if there is a damaged clip on the timeline. Download piano2.wav from here...

...and experiment with that by itself on a fresh Audacity. It's six seconds long. If that works, then your show may be damaged.
