Picking up what appears to be radio signal

Post by Raymond Rodriguez » Fri Jun 19, 2009 4:29 pm

At first I thought it was coming through the phone microphone. But whether I use a dynamic mic, the phone, or even when both are off it picks up and I can hear the chatter in the background when I play it back. It is distinctly a radio station with a slight echo or wave to the sound, but I don't own a radio!

My phone, TV and web provider is Verizon, could I be picking up something from their signal through my web connection?

Any thoughts?

If you have strong enough radio signals in your neighborhood, you don't need a radio at all. Are there any red and white striped towers around?

You can make radio problems much worse by having old or dirty audio connections or connections that are loose. Glass cleaner and fresh paper towels go a long way to curing this.

This problem tends to change with movement. If you plug your computer in and run it in another room, is the interference still there? Did it change? Louder?

Do you listen to on-line radio stations? Could you have left on running on low volume? Restart your computer.

Another trick is find an actual AM radio (it's almost never FM) and see if you can identify the station.

Hi Koz,

There aren't any towers around but I live in an apartment complex and that has to be the problem. The connections are all different and new, and the computer is less than a year old.

It does sound like an AM station from the content, but moving around the house is really not an option since the apartment is small.

I just logged on to: stickam.com and I can see the VU meter bouncing up and down continuously, so it is not an Audacity problem. But thanks, I at least have a possible source to focus on.

Ray
