no.....The line-in when used records nothing except an intermittent clicking, and I assumed it was a dodgy line-in socket, but i can play via line-in ok

the mic socket records fine,it's as if the recorder cannot pick up the signal from line-in but can via mic.

This led me to assume that separate channels are used for each input.and the line-in recording channel is bad.

The Windows sound control panels should let you select connection for capture and set the volume in the case of the analog signals.

thanks for that however i have already set all these and it still does not explain why i can record via mic when I set the value there but not via line-in when I change to that input.

via line-in I can hear the vinyl playing through the pc speakers but the signals are not captured to file,some waves are seen in the resulting file which just replicate the cracks and hisses I hear on playback.

it seems the signals are not converting to the file format.on mic they are
