hi.

i am folowing the step by step instructions to set up audacity. i am using vista and trying to record from a tape deck connected to a reciever. the tape out is going to the line-in on the computer (rca to mini jack)

1. preferences changed to have line-in enabled for playback and recording.
2. record in stereo enabled
3. line-in has been unmuted for listening pleaser while recording
4. NOW THE PROBLEM. - i am supposed to set input level by enabling "monitor input" and then playing a tape to set level. i choose monitor input (although nothing really happens in drop down, eg no check mark next to words) and then start tape. I can hear the music, but the input level meter is not visually showing any sound.

so thats the rub. any thoughts? not sure what to do. i think i ahve everything connected correctly. only thing that comes to mind is to maybe connect tape deck directly to computer, but i am not sure that will help....

Just click once in the input meter bars - this will turn monitoring on - clicking again (while monitoring without recording) will turn monitoring off.

Clicking in the meter bar while recording/playback will retain montoring but re-set the meter.

This is poorly documented and non-intuitive - and has been the subject of feature request discussions with the developers.
