Vista 32 / M-Audio | Audacity will record but not play.

Post by samizdat » Sat Jun 13, 2009 8:58 am

Hello. Thanks for reading this! I did multiple searches and a lot of reading but did not find the solution to my problem.
- I am on a Dell w/ Vista 32bit.

Preface - I am a guitarist hoping to use Audacity 1.3.5 as a recording software in conjunction with my M-Audio Fast Track USB. I plugged the M-Audio into my USB and immediately could not hear media player sounds unless I plugged my speakers into the headphone jack of the M-Audio. Today I bought a stereo wire adapter to plug into the M-Audio's axillary outputs and into a guitar amp, since I need powered speakers / monitors. (Yeah, I know that seems odd but I couldn't find powered speakers with axillary cables. I am using another amp to run my guitar from.)

The Problem - With my guitar amp going into the M-Audio I seem to have two choices:
In Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > Channels at 1 mono it doesn't seem to record, at 2 stereo it does record but I can not hear the audio when I play it back. If I select Channels over 4 I get the following error" Error while opening sound device. I have both the recording and playback device set to my M-Audio Fast Track:

I can hear all other sounds (my guitar, media player sounds, etc.)

I have tried ticking the 'Software Playthrough' Options to no avail.
What can I do to hear Audacity play back the recording?

Thanks for your time!

Have a go with Audacity 1.3.7

If you still have the same issue, go to the "Help" menu and open "Audio Device Info" then copy and paste the information into your reply.
