Unable to open files...

Post by dustin brown » Wed Jun 10, 2009 4:11 am

Hello,
I actually just recently started using Audacity and have only recorded 2 tracks. Unfortunately, now when I try to open one of the files it gives me a message saying it couldn't find the data folder, and when I look, I see the data folder with the files in it. But it still won't open. And I'm afraid I've lost the recording comepletely. The program hasn't crashed, it's just some kind of data corruption I think. If so, how, if possible, would I be able to save the data. Could I use an SD card to save the file on, that way if the data gets currupted I have a back-up. Because the back-up files the program saves don't work either.

Thank you for your time.

This happens most often when people try to clean up or organize their computer after capturing a performance. Audacity records the exact names and locations of everything when you Save as Project. It always looks in the same places and if there's something missing or misnamed, the show will not open.

There was a poster a while back who insisted he didn't move anything. Eventually, under severe cross examination, he tearfully confessed that he tried to create a new folder inside his Music folder to put all his work. /Music/Show is different from /Music/Thursday/Show. Audacity couldn't figure out what he did and the show crashed. It came back when he put everything back where it was.

Audacity will not Save sound files. To get a versatile, stable, movable sound file, you have to Export one.

I did rename the file, but it was working just after that. We now have also come onto the same problem with our original recording, which we didn't do anything to. We left it in it's own file to do it's thing. I was also given a warning that said that two audacity programs could not be running simultaniously, unless done by opening a "new" project in the file menu. Could that be a problem, because I did open a seperate application with the "new" in order to record something unrelated and paste it in the original project. And I assure you I'm telling you all I've done, because like I said, I just recently downloaded the program, and I like it very much, I just wish my recordings would stop mysteriously stop working.

The USB device must be connected and recognised by your OS before you open Audacity.
Then check in "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O" that the USB device is selected as the recording device (if you have to make a change here you may need to restart Audacity again).
