Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

microphone level

Post by drturnbull » Mon Jun 08, 2009 12:55 pm

If I use the control panel in Vista to set the microphone level of my logitech usb mic, then record with Audacity, the sound level is too low (with the Audacity setting on max) and when I recheck the control panel setting it has been reset to a low level. Audacity doesn't do that to my internal microphone, and other recording programmes don't do it to my external mic.

Any suggestions very welcome :)

There's a setting in Audacity Preferences called...

Edit > Preferences > Audi I/O > [X] Do Not Modify Device Settings.

Thank you very much for this reply. Unfortunately, I can't find this dialogue box . Edit > preferences gives me on the audio i/o tab only "play the other tracks while recording new one" and "software playthrough....."

I found a dialogue box in control panel > sound > recording> microphone> advance
[X] Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device
[X] Give exclusive mode applications priority
I tried unticking these but it made no difference.
On another PC, I have the same problem, except that the microphone level set by Audacity is acceptable (although not perfect)

You should probably kill the Audacity Preferences which in 1.2 for Windows is very hard to do. try downloading and installing Audacity 1.3.7. You can put both on your machine as long as you only use one at a time.

Audacity 1.2 Projects will open up in 1.3
