Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

HI! When you import files - a new track is created. is it possible to merge the tracks. I know its simple but how do you do it? Onto one line?

There are two ways of doing this.

If you want the second track to follow the first immediately, you can Cut the second track, click on the first track and pressing Fast Forward (>>). Then click Paste. The second track will follow the first immediately.

You can also shift the second track relative to the first using the Time Shift tool. Once it's in place you can click Project -> Quick Mix (or Tracks -> Mix and Render). This will mix both tracks down to a single one, adding one to the other wherever they overlap.

Here's a page with info on the various Tools:

That said, it's always better to leave each sound in a project in separate tracks until you export the whole thing unless you're absolutely sure you want those two tracks mixed together permanently. Mixing cannot be undone unless you use Undo, but then you'll also lose any other changes you've made more recently (you also lose the ability to Undo when you close Audacity and re-open it).
