Input problem

So,

I searched and searched and found nothing quite like my problem.

I use an HP Deluxe Webcam as my input. This is my first real shot at actually recording something. So I opened Audacity and it automatically picked up my webcam as an input device. Awesome.

I recorded a few things and didn't like the peaking, so I tried to adjust the input volume (which said it was already down to 0.0)

I did the test input on the mixer toolbar and tried to adjust the volume. I don't know what happened, I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong, but now all of a sudden Audacity won't read input from the mic. I go to Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O. The Output is the Microsoft Sound Mapper, and the Input is listed as my HP Deluxe Webcam, but if I press record or try to test input nothing happens.

My little light on the webcam does turn on which I take to mean that it knows that it's supposed to be in use, but Audacity isn't taking anything from it.

Anybody got any ideas?

The webcam may deliver the sound to the Windows Control Panel as one sound device and it's up to you to select it or turn it on.
