Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

New Installation

Post by rj7500 » Tue Jun 02, 2009 6:51 pm

I recently installed Audacity 1.2.6 on my Dell Desktop running Windows XP Media Center Audition.
I am primarily using Audacity for voice recording through a Tascam USB122 A to D converter. When I connect the Tascam to a USB port and open Audacity it does not record anything from the microphone.

I've determined that the Tascam is working properly but I suspect that there are some settings that I have neglected to make. My default device for audio recording is Sigma Tel Audio and yes, the computer seems to have recognized the installation of the Tascam

Any help will be greatly appreciated

<<<Sigma Tel Audio >>>

That's the built-in audio, not the device with your voice on it. You need to select that in the Windows Control Panel.

Hi and thanks for your time.

I tried everything you suggested but the only option listed in any drop down box for recording or playback is Sigma Tel.

Did the computer not recognize the USB 122 driver?

USB devices must be connected and recognised by Windows BEFORE you open Audacity.

Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions regarding my new installation. My problem turned out to be a driver problem with my US122 A_D converter.

Now as I learn to use Audacity, I have a few questions that don't seem to be addressed in the manual.

1. If I record a track and want to select just a portion of that track from within, how can I select that portion?

2. If I'm recording a voice track, is there a way to listen as I record in real time, without the delay?

3. I managed to hide my meter bars and can't figure out how to restore them.

Thanks in advance for your help

1) http://audacityteam.org/manual-1.2/tuto ... nner2.html

2) If you are using a USB interface then you need to monitor before it goes into the computer. Some USB devices have a headphone socket for the purpose. If no headphone socket, then leave one ear uncovered so that you can hear acoustically.

3) View > Toolbars > Meter Toolbar

Still looking for an answer. If I record 2 minutes with of material and want only to listen to a selection within that 2 minutes. How can I get the cursor to that point without playing through the material I'm avoiding.

Thanks in advance

Hello again Bob.

Use the zoom tools (magnifying glass icons) if necessary so that you can see the bit that you want to play,
then click with the left mouse button at the start of the selection, and while you hold the mouse button down, drag across the track to the end point of the selection that you want.

You can now click on the Play button (or press the spacebar to play) and the selected area will play.

If you want to adjust the position of one end or the other of the selection, hold down the SHIFT key and click near the end that you want to adjust. Hold down the SHIFT key and the left mouse button and you can adjust the selection as required.

If you apply any effects while you have an area selected, the effect will only be applied to the selected region.

<<<3. I managed to hide my meter bars and can't figure out how to restore them. >>>

View or Window > Turn Meter Bar On.
