Have Lame DLL but won't install in Audacity

1. When following the link to the zip file for lame, the only option is an .exe file. If i try to save it as a zip it still doesn't work.
2. I followed the link to the support wiki and downloaded the unzipped dll from there. When trying to add it under edit>preferences, it finds the file but doesn't change anything. The audacity preferences tabbed box (under file formats) still says "MP3 exportinf plugin not found." The bit rate cannot be set either.
This is on Windoxs XP Service Pack 3 - Audacity 1.2.6.

If you run the EXE file, it will create a folder in the "Programs" directory (I think it's called "Lame for Audacity", or something like that). the EXE file will then place the required dll into that folder.
If that still does not work, upgrade to Audacity 1.3.7, or if you really want to stick with Audacity 1.2 until Audacity 2.0 is released, try this version:

I have the same problem - I install and locate the DLL but it still says "plugin not found" in the Prefs window. I tried this with both Audacity 1.2.6 and Beta 1.3.7 (where I click the button to Locate Mp3 library and it still says "MP3 Export library not found"). I'm running Windows XP Pro 2002 with SP 2 installed, and installed the dll from the recommended website. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Try the other version that I mentioned in my last post.
I'm trying to get a definitive answer from the developers about this - for Audacity 1.3.7, the new Audacity version of Lame must be used, but I'm not so sure about 1.2.6.

Lame is not required for WAV Export, it is only required for MP3 Export.
Are you reporting this problem

or this one:

Help! I've been using Audacity 1.2 for a long time and never had a problem converting to mp3 files until yesterday, when I'd get the message "could not open mp3 encoding library." It cannot find the LAME program for conversion. Don't know what happened to it, since all downloads are in the correct file. I've tried every possible download for LAME dll as per the site a second and third time and I still get the same message. Any suggestions?

So you are saying that you could Export MP3s from Audacity last week but not this week? What has changed between then and now?

The vast majority of problems with Lame are when users try to configure Audacity to use incompatible versions of Lame.
These are the instructions and a link to the correct version of Lame.

In a few rare cases this version of Lame will not work in Audacity 1.2.6, in which case you are advised to upgrade to Audacity 1.3.7
