You got that from a Movie DVD, right? That's not a "sound file" like you're thinking. That's a surround transport stream and it could contain Dolby Surround 5.1, six audio channels, and PCM Stereo mixdown, two more audio channels of the same show at the same time. It could contain a mono mixdown, too. That's why all the tools seem to be schizophrenic. You need something that can read and manage Dolby AC3. That would not be Audacity.

Hi,
I looked at your file. It could be a recording of a TV program on a dvr. It's a two channel ac3 224kbit/s. It's stereo but the two channels are almost identical, probably because the original TV program is mono. So you can leave it stereo or make it mono, it won't matter much.

Thanks George, you beat me to it
Code: Select all
Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
File size : 37.8 MiB
Duration : 23mn 36s
Overall bit rate : 224 Kbps
Audio Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Duration : 23mn 36s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 224 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel positions : L R
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Stream size : 37.8 MiB (100%)
Opening it in Audacity 1.3.7 on Linux it comes up as a stereo file, though as George has said, the two channels are almost identical.
