play back during recording

Post by seandwyer » Sun May 31, 2009 1:57 am

Hi Folks,

I'm new to this, but have used other recording packages. I've watched a few tutorials on youtube etc, but seem to be having a strange issue!

I can record and play back tracks - no problem. I've used regular mic's and a guitar input - everything works and sounds great. The problem is that once I have recorded a track, I need to hear it playing back while I record successive tracks. I simply cannot hear any previously recorded tracks playing while recording new ones, so there is no hope of keeping in time or having any frame of refference. The monitor looks like it is playing back - and when I press the stop button, it does play for about 1/2 a second before stopping everything.

Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone explain how to get previous tracks to play during recording? I've been in the prefferences and have messed about, making sure that it says that it should be playing back during recording - but still not luck.

Thanks very much!!

Go to Edit, Preferences, Audio I/O, Check the box "Play other tracks while recording new one"

Flapjack 47 - Thanks for the suggestion. I actually already had done that with no success - but I did finally find the answer (Ithink). Apparently the audio function on my computer can either play or record, but not both at once. When I plugged the iMic in it let the computers utility be used to play back while using iMic to recored another track.

So - from now on I guess I will record the first track using the computers utility, then plug the iMic in, change my preferences to it in the control panel and then record the rest of the successive tracks through it while listening.

Confusing!

Glad to hear you find a solution to the problem. I have Windows Vista, which has a whole array of other wacky "quirks" that I have to work with.
