sound below midline

I am trying to record. mic is going through preamp into computer. the sound waves are underneath the recording line and no sound on playback. How to fix?

the red meter (sound level?) is on but not moving...make sense? I recently installed skype and seems trouble started then.

Yes, that and Vonage take over the computer sound pathways. You will need to put the Windows Sound Panel controls back where they should be for straight recording.
