MP3 import - Cut is grayed out

I recorded an mp3 of an internet radio broadcast which I am trying to edit.
I have used Audacity in the past for editing wav files and have not had a problem.
In this case however, after I select a section to be deleted, "Cut" is grayed out and nothing is cut. Actually most of the drop down menus are grayed out.
Also, when I try to move the cursor to hear a different part of the recording, it does not play from the new place but instead remains where it is.
Please advise if I am trying to do something which will not work because it is an mp3 or?
Thanks in advance

It would have worked fine had it actually been an MP3. The latest streaming work is all Flash (h.263), MP4, or M4A. Some of the Apple stuff is AAC.

You should change Windows to show you file extensions. That usually clears up a lot of problems.

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > [ ] Hide File Extensions (de-select) > Apply Changes to Everything > OK.

You can convert between file types with Super or Switch the audio conversion programs. Apple QuickTime Pro will do it, too if you have that on your PC.

Go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Interface" and make sure that "Clean Speech Mode" is not selected.

Thanks for the answers.
Actually after I submitted this question I continued to search the forums and found an old posting that
said to use the "stop" button instead of the "pause" button - and that worked! "Cut" was no longer gray!
However I will look into other formats because while the resulting mp3 works fine on my computer, it does not play
when the web page it is linked to is live on line.

A common reason for that is that the link points to your local file rather than the on-line file.
