<<<i record a live track,>>>

The latest slippery words has "Live" meaning you captured something "Live" from the internet, not you sang in front of a microphone with your guitar. Which is it?

It may be that your computer can not dump the data fast enough onto your hard drive and is dropping half of the data. What sample rate and bit depth are you using?
How much free space on your C: drive?
Have you defragmented the C: drive lately?

ive tried all 3 sample rates, but i leave it at 16bit cuz thats what my soundcard is.
i have 30GB left on my storage device that i use for it(set in the preferences)
and i defreg it usually every week or so. i just did it 2 days ago

<<<i have 30GB left on my storage device>>>

"Storage Device?" Can you talk about that?

How much room is there on your System Drive? Can we assume that's where Audacity is running?

[Stunned blank look]

It's official. I have no idea.

Speed changes almost always happen when the computer isn't going fast enough for some reason.

...... the existing clip plays fast but the pitch doesn't go up .......

If you open the clip in a plain, non-complicated timeline with no recording or sharing or anything -- straight playback, does it play OK?

Talk about the computer. Include processor speed and amount of memory.

ive had this program running before with no problems, now after i formated my system its never worked the same.

the weird thing is, i opened my saved .aup files that i had from before and they play back perfectly fine. with my new stuff im trying to record just wont play back properly
and another thing thats weird. if i restart my computer and run audacity after comp loads up, it wont record anything. but once i open up "Winamp Media Player" and play a song. audacity will record after that, but the playback is still messed up
