Help!

I am trying to start using Audacity, but I cannot play my recordings. My computer brings up Windows Media Player, and then I get the following message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

How do I proceed?

Audacity makes "projects". These comprise of 2 parts:
1) a file called filename.aup
2) a data folder containing data that is used in the project.

Neither of these are audio files!

To create an audio file you need to "Export" (from the file menu) in the required format.
Exporting as MP3 is good for uploading to the web/i-pods/e-mails
Exporting as WAV is good for making CDs, high quality computer files.
