Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

cannot use it

Post by lazi » Fri May 29, 2009 1:08 am

Hello
I use the Windows system. I have been through 4 computers in the last few years. On the first two, the audacity program worked 100%. But on my last two computers, the audacity just flatlines whenever I try to record. Can anyone help, or point me in the right direction?

What input source are you trying to record from? A microphone of some sort? Do you know how to select an input source in Preferences? --Allen

Thanks Allen
Usually I play a sound recording that is stored in my computer, or else it is a CD Rom, or something similar.
I have recorded successfully with Audacity before, but now on my two newer computers, it just doesn't work anymore. I cannot see that I am doing anything different, so I cannot work out what the problem is.
Up until recently Audacity has been a great program for me.
Hope someone can help

Recorded What?

What is the performance you are trying to capture in Audacity?

Is that what you're trying to record? Are you trying to play a CD or sound file on your computer and record those sounds into Audacity? If so, what you need to do is not try to record these sounds, but simply open the sound files in Audacity. Just select Open from the File menu, navigate to the file (even if it's on the CD), and then open it.

Just a stab at what you're trying to tell us. If I'm wrong, then like Koz says, you'll need to tell us what you're trying to record.

Thanks for you help.

I just now inserted a CD or CD Rom, which plays perfectly well on the computer. I then went to "open" (on Audacity), selected the CD Rom, clicked open, but Audacity "replied" that it does not recognise this type of file.

Normally, in my earlier computers, I would just play this CD Rom, Press Record on audacity, and it would be OK. I've done that countless numbers of times successfully on my past computers. But for some reason I cannot do it anymore.

(As I said, it would be either a CD Rom, or a sound file stored in my computer)

In the past, what you were doing (directly recording the output of your sound card into Audacity) is tricky and dependent on your computer's setup, so it's not surprising that it doesn't work with your new computers. I can think of two suggestions for you now:

1) Instead of Open, try "Import Audio" under the "Project" menu. I don't think this should make a difference, but it might be worth a shot. (I have a Mac, and 1.2 doesn't work well on Mac, so I can't really predict how yours will behave.)

2) Consider upgrading to Audacity 1.3. It works a lot better than 1.2. Once you install 1.3, and then load the FFmpeg and LAME libraries through Preferences, I doubt you'll have a problem.

Also, what formats are the files you're trying to use in? What are their filename extensions? .wav? .mp3? .aac?

If you are, in a roundabout way, describing being able to capture anything your computer is playing, then you need to be digging inside the Windows Control Panels. This is a common request for people trying to record internet audio. Same problem. It plays but you can't capture it in Audacity.
