Did you try recording internet audio after you installed Audacity? Maybe you installed or plugged in a USB sound card or device? Vonage or Skype telephone calls? USB Turntable? All of those reset the Windows sound services. In the case of a USB capture device, Windows will try to send sound back to the device as well as capture the sound coming back. The device has no idea what to do with that and the sound on your computer drops dead.

Windows Control Panel

Yes. You don't have to do that, you can open the Windows Control Panels and make sure Windows is set to play back to the speakers and not the turntable. That will save you from crawling behind the turntable every time you want to record.
