Audacity is shutting down, error message, losing recordings

Audacity is shutting down, giving an error message, and I am losing recordings with no chance to save.
I don't want to know how to the temp files really, I want to know why this happens, and if it can be repaired.
This is Audacity 1.2.6 for Windows® 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista and I am using vista.
This happens about 50 % of the time. This is a recent download. (today)
Thanks

I think I'm seeing the same issue.
I downloaded Audacity 1.2.6 stable recently. (Datestamp shows May 10, 10am Eastern time)
I'm using Audacity to record LPs entering the PC through the Line-In on my sound card, and the program crashes frequently.
The computer is a fresh install of Windows Server 2008, and is relatively quick and responsive.
I've just configured the audacity.exe to run in COmpatibility Mode, set to Win XP SP2. I'll give that a whirl, and post back whether or not that seems to have any affect on the problem.

<<<I am losing recordings >>>
What recordings? We know the other poster is recording the Line-In of his sound card. What are you doing?
Open up the hard drive and see how full it is. Error check and defragment. If it still crashes, we'll go from there.

I'm having the same problem. It can happen if I just record a few seconds, then stop the recording.
It seems to happen more often if I stop the recording soon after starting it (within say 10 seconds),
but it has happened with longer recordings as well. I dont' remember the exact message, but it pops
up a messagebox that has a generic error message.
I have 160GB free space. No fragmentation to speak of.
Seems like an intermittent bug to me. I'm a software developer, and if one of my apps were acting like
this, I would know I had a bug. Maybe some kind of thread sync issue?

The problem may be version nomenclature. We wish the developers would stop calling 1.3.7 "unstable." In many instances it's far more stable and useful than the very much older 1.2.
Audacity 1.2 belches smoke, only starts if the temperature is above 35 F, the passenger side door no longer closes all the way, and the radio only works on the polka dance station.
Upgrade.

Koz,
Thanks for the reply. Sounds reasonable. I'll try upgrading to 1.3.7.

Audacity plays games with its preference and configuration files. You know you got a clean install if the new Audacity asks you "English?" at first birthday. If it doesn't ask you that, then you are still standing on pieces of the old Audacity.
