Hello everyone,
I have been using Audacity for a while now, and I have had no trouble with it. However, it has been having trouble exporting wavs and mp3s lately. I'll do stuff like import a file, trim silence away, and try to export it. Four out of five times it will either give me the "Audacity has stopped responding" message, or just export a 0 byte file. Exporting in Ogg Vorbis seems to work fine. I downloaded a new copy of Lame_enc.dll, just in case, but that was not the problem. I even reinstalled Audacity, to no avail. When I do a bigger project like censoring lyrics, it seems to give me no trouble; but then, my test group is smaller.
For technical details, I am running the "latest stable version" on a 64-bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate. It worked fine until a few weeks ago.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Re: trouble with exporting
I don't know how to do it in Vista, but how full is your hard drive? If you didn't change anything major and it's been working famously until a week ago, that may be the magic time you filled up your drive.
Audio production takes up a lot of room and it's easy to lose track of how many long shows you have on your machine. Suddenly one day your machine starts working funny and jobs that need drive space -- like exporting sound files either fail or act insane.
Empty your trash. Does Vista still have Error Checking and Defragmentation?

Re: trouble with exporting
Thanks for the help, but I have plenty of hard disk space left. I will run an error scan on it.
Re: trouble with exporting
I too am having a terrible time exporting an MP3 file in audacity. I have been having this trouble since I downloaded Audacity to my new laptop which is running vista. I did not have ANY trouble with my Windows XP. I have re-downloaded lame too many times and even downloaded the 3.98.2 dll from free-codecs.com today. I am still getting the same message that states, "can not open the lame encoding library. ANY HELP WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
Re: trouble with exporting
I have been having the same problem. I made my first mix tape last week and I used Audacity's default preferences. I then exported it as an Mp3 file with no problems. I made a new mix this week and changed the sampling rate to 88200Hz, the sample format to 32-bit float, and changed the Mp3 export format to 320kbps instead of 128kbps. Unfortunately, when I try to export this project as Mp3, it saves as a small file with only 2 bytes and won't play back. However I successfully exported this same project as a Wave file and it plays fine. How can I export this project as a Mp3 file? (I too have enough space on the hard drive)
cheers

@jrobinson Make sure Audacity knows where to find Lame. Go under Preferences>File Format>Find Lame Library. Be sure Audacity is directed to the correct address.
