Sound Trouble

I've just downloaded audacity for the first time. I imported an mp3 file, and it wasn't bought from itunes so I know that's not the problem. Every time I click play, all I get is a quick white noise sound. It's like audacity is playing the entire track at once. The green sound bars flash up quickly then disappear as soon as the sound goes away. What am I doing wrong? How do I fix it?

That wasn't an MP3 file. Do you have Windows set so it shows you file extensions? My Computer > Folder Options > View. Turn off "Hide File Extensions."
Is it still an MP3 file?
Another way to do it is Right-Click > Properties > Advanced. Sometimes that will tell you what's going on. That will probably also tell you you have am MP4, WMA, or M4A file.
Convert in Super or Switch to get a nice WAV file for editing.

Another way out might be Audacity 1.3. That will recognize more different file types than 1.2
