Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Doing a simple edit

Post by loninappleton » Wed May 20, 2009 5:00 am

I loaded in a wav file to edit-- just simply snip 30 mins off the end so it's burn using Nero to a cd.

The file loads and I highlight 61 mins then ask for delete outside of range.

But it seems that *all* functions are disabled. What did I miss?

I checked the content help but all that says is what the disabled tab is supposed to do. How do I turn on the editing functions?

OS is XP.

Audacity Version is 1.2.6

I have not worked audio editing software much in recent years. Please do not use shorthand.

The tools in Audacity 1.2 only work when there is some audio selected on the timeline. Edit > Select > All if you want a tool to apply to the whole show.

And then do the snip? This is the part I don't get.

To review: select all,
then highlight the part to cut
then use the ....

Wait, the tab says cut outside of the highlight

so select all,
highlight the part to save
then use the tab to cut.

There's lots of variations on how to trim off a bit of a track - the way I do it:

Say I have a 30 minute track and I want to delete the last 10 minutes (from 20:00 to 30:00)
I click with the left mouse button on the track at 20:00, then while holding down the mouse button, drag across to the right until I get to (or past) the end of the track (at 30:00)
Then I press the "Del" key. (Ctrl+X, or Ctrl+K will also do the job, or use "Cut" or "Delete" from the Edit menu).

After editing the track it is necessary to "Export" (File menu) to make a normal audio file that can be burned to CD.
